Block Bordered by Elm, Main, Lamar, Poydras

All illustrated retail storefronts now gone. The eastern end of this block was combined with the western end of the adjacent block to the east (the block bordered by Elm, Main, Poydras, Murphy), by taking out Poydras Street.

At the same time, the "new" Griffin (see "Pacific/Elm" images) was created by taking out storefronts 1009, 1011, 1013, and 1015 Main Street, and storefronts 1008, 1010, 1012, and 1014 Elm Steet.

This formed a new block bordered by Elm, Main, Lamar, and the "new" Griffin.

This block is now occupied by the Bank of America Plaza, built in 1985 to a height of 72 stories. It is currently the tallest building in Dallas.

Notice the Sanger Brothers department store occupying the block just to the east of this block. Sanger Brothers merged with A. Harris department stores in 1961. The new company then occupied a new building on the block bordered by Federal, Pacific, Field, and Akard. Sanger Harris became Foleys in 1987.

In addition to the western end of this block being combined to the eastern end of the block adjacent to the west (taking out Poydras Street), storefronts 1009, 1011, 1013, and 1015 Main Street, and storefronts 1008, 1010, 1012, and 1014 Elm Steet were removed to make way for the "new" Griffin Street.

The eastern end of this block was then combined with the western end of the adjacent block to the east (the block bordered by Elm, Main, Murphy, and Field) by taking out Murphy Street to form a larger block on which One Main Place was built in 1968.

This new block was bordered by Elm, Main, the "new" Griffin, and Field.

Most of the illustrated retail space still exists. A. Harris occupied the first 5 floors of the Kirby Bldg prior to merging with Sanger Bros. Sanger-Harris occupied the block bordered by Federal, Pacific, Field, and Akard.

The Kirby Building, 1509 Main Street, was built in 1913 to a height of 17 floors. In the late 1990s, it began a converstion to residential, and is now one of the most sought after downtown residential conversions. Davenport and Wiggins moved to 1108 Kirby Building in 1952, and officed there until the retirement of the original partners in the 1970s.

A. Harris merged with Sanger Brothers in 1961, and relocated to a new building on a block bordered by Federal, Pacific, Field, and Akard.

Stone Street became a pedestrian walkway.
