Block Bordered by Elm, Main, Lamar, Poydras
All
illustrated retail storefronts now gone. The eastern end of this block was combined with the western end of the adjacent
block to the east (the block bordered by Elm, Main, Poydras, Murphy), by taking out Poydras Street.
At the same time,
the "new" Griffin (see "Pacific/Elm" images) was created by taking out storefronts 1009, 1011, 1013, and 1015 Main Street,
and storefronts 1008, 1010, 1012, and 1014 Elm Steet.
This formed a new block bordered by Elm, Main, Lamar, and the
"new" Griffin.
This block is now occupied by the Bank of America Plaza, built in 1985 to a height of 72 stories. It
is currently the tallest building in Dallas.
Notice the Sanger Brothers department store occupying the block just to
the east of this block. Sanger Brothers merged with A. Harris department stores in 1961. The new company then occupied a
new building on the block bordered by Federal, Pacific, Field, and Akard. Sanger Harris became Foleys in 1987.

Block Bordered By Elm, Main, Poydras, Murphy

In addition to the western end of this block being combined to the eastern
end of the block adjacent to the west (taking out Poydras Street), storefronts 1009, 1011, 1013, and 1015 Main Street, and
storefronts 1008, 1010, 1012, and 1014 Elm Steet were removed to make way for the "new" Griffin Street.
The eastern
end of this block was then combined with the western end of the adjacent block to the east (the block bordered by Elm, Main,
Murphy, and Field) by taking out Murphy Street to form a larger block on which One Main Place was built in 1968.
This
new block was bordered by Elm, Main, the "new" Griffin, and Field.

was bordered by Elm, Main, the "new" Griffin, and Field. This block is the site of One Main Place, 1201 Main Street, built
in 1968 to a height of 34 stories.

Most

The Republic National and First National Banks moved to new towers
in the 1950s.

Most
of the illustrated retail space still exists. A. Harris occupied the first 5 floors of the Kirby Bldg prior to merging with
Sanger Bros. Sanger-Harris occupied the block bordered by Federal, Pacific, Field, and Akard.
The Kirby Building,
1509 Main Street, was built in 1913 to a height of 17 floors. In the late 1990s, it began a converstion to residential, and
is now one of the most sought after downtown residential conversions. Davenport and Wiggins moved to 1108 Kirby Building
in 1952, and officed there until the retirement of the original partners in the 1970s.
A. Harris merged with Sanger
Brothers in 1961, and relocated to a new building on a block bordered by Federal, Pacific, Field, and Akard.
Stone
Street became a pedestrian walkway.

Of
note on this block is the Praetorian Building which, when built in 1907, was the tallest building in Dallas at 15 stories.
It was noted at the time as Dallas' first "skyscraper".

built in 1987 to a height of 60 stories.
